Beyond Containers: Why the Future of Caribbean Shipping Will Be Powered Differently
For more than half a century, the shipping industry has been defined by one thing: containers.
Ports competed to handle more of them. Shipping lines built larger vessels to carry them. Countries invested billions of dollars in terminals, cranes, and logistics infrastructure to move them more efficiently.
But another transformation is quietly unfolding, one that could prove just as significant as the container revolution itself.
The future of shipping will not simply be shaped by where cargo moves. It will increasingly be shaped by how ships are powered.
Around the world, new vessels are being designed to run on alternative fuels. Others are being built to connect directly to shore-side electricity while at berth, reducing emissions and improving efficiency. International regulations are tightening, customers are demanding cleaner supply chains, and shipping lines are making long-term decisions based on a lower-carbon future.
The global maritime industry is entering an energy transition, and the Caribbean can no longer afford to view it as a distant conversation.
That message resonated strongly at the recently concluded Caribbean Shipping Executives’ Conference in Curaçao, where delegates received the findings of a landmark study examining the readiness of seven Caribbean countries to support shore-side power and green fuel bunkering.
The report’s conclusion was clear: the region is still in the early stages of preparing for this transition. No port currently provides operational, port-led shore power or comprehensive green fuel bunkering services, and readiness remains uneven across the Caribbean.
Yet the findings are not a warning of impending failure. They are an invitation to prepare.
The maritime energy transition is not happening overnight. The ships that will dominate global trade ten and twenty years from now are only beginning to enter the market. Ports still have time to adapt. But the window for preparation is not unlimited.
For Jamaica, the issue is especially important.
For years, the country has worked to establish itself as a logistics hub and a vital gateway for trade in the Americas. Maintaining that position in the decades ahead will require more than efficient cargo handling and modern infrastructure. It will require an understanding that the future of shipping may be powered differently from the past.
In many ways, that future has already begun to arrive.
LNG-fuelled vessels are already calling at Jamaican ports, and alternative fuel activity is beginning to emerge in the region. The study identifies Jamaica as one of only three countries in the Caribbean with emerging readiness for green fuel bunkering, alongside Trinidad and Tobago and The Bahamas.
This does not mean Jamaica has all the answers.
But it does suggest that the country has an opportunity to participate in shaping the region’s next chapter instead of waiting for it to be written elsewhere.
Perhaps the study’s most important message is that the Caribbean does not need to replicate the same infrastructure in every port. Instead, it points to a future built on cooperation and specialisation, where some countries emerge as fuel suppliers, others as receiving ports, and others as logistics and distribution centres supporting new shipping corridors.
This approach is both practical and necessary. Small island states cannot afford to chase every opportunity at once and as such strategic choices will matter.
The decisions made over the next few years could influence where investment flows, how trade routes evolve, and which ports become integral to the next generation of global shipping.
For Jamaica, that raises an important question.
As the industry moves beyond traditional fuels and toward new energy solutions, what role does the country want to play?
Will it become a leader in facilitating the maritime energy transition? Will it position itself as a strategic partner in emerging green shipping corridors? Or will it simply respond to changes that others have already anticipated?
The answers to these questions are still being written, but what is certain is that the future of shipping will be about more than moving containers from one port to another. It will also be about energy, resilience, and readiness.
And while containers may continue to dominate global trade, the ships carrying them, and the ports serving them, are likely to be powered very differently from those we know today.
